It’s no surprise that when many individuals and brands hear the words ‘climate emergency’ or ‘carbon emissions’ there is a collaborative shudder. A scary picture of doom and gloom has been painted, and the challenge feels too daunting to face. Not so for fellow Kiwis Leanne Bats and Jussara Bierman who decided to take on the climate action challenge, and co-founded a very “cool” initiative aptly named Cool Points Club.

Cool Points Club is all about creating new ways for brands and individuals to be climate active, with the goal of demolishing carbon, permanently. The Club’s carbon removal partners are leading the development of technologies that, at scale, can help solve the climate crisis.

“We were following the science and witnessing the local and global impact of climate change, but could no longer be passive observers”, says Jussara. “Having lived and worked in emerging economies I have first-hand experience of the impact of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, affecting the lives of millions. We wanted to help change the narrative and make climate action mainstream.”

Cool Points Club is committed to investing in the most promising carbon removal technologies; a kickstarter for the carbon removal marketplace.

In December 2021 Cool Points Club launched Islands of Cool and issued Islands One, 100 NFTs (non-fungible tokens) worth US$1000 apiece, each one part of a map created by New Zealand artist T-Wei. This is the company’s first step to seed funding for growing the business. Each NFT will fund the removal of one tonne of carbon from the atmosphere, and the royalties coded into them will go on to fund more removal with each and every trade, effectively creating NFTs as digital carbon sponges.

Islands of Cool is a carbon negative art experiment, creatively reimagining climate action. The mission is to establish a digital world of unexpected environmental significance for our physical one, via digital assets (NFTs) to fund real world carbon removal. Island One investors have the ability to provide input and shape the Islands of Cool project.

Leanne adds, “As a mother I have a very real investment in ensuring our climate is fit for future generations. We recognised that the time for action is now. And, by reimagining climate action and identifying major opportunities to help prove and scale new climate technologies, we knew we could make a difference. We believe climate action is relatable, attainable and want to empower others to take action with us.”

Whilst it is early days, Island One has already sold 50% of the allocated pieces. Cool Points Club is seeking committed climate action investors to share and grow the vision. The next Islands of Cool drop will be made up of a much larger number of NFTs, and will be available later in 2022.
